The Statue of Liberty, 1883

Statue of Liberty Being Built 1883

This photo’s pretty common on the internet, but it is one of my favourites and great for the 4th of July: the head of the Statue of Liberty while the statue was being constructed, on display in a Parisian park in 1883.

The photo was taken by Albert Fernique and is held by the New York Public Library.  The statue finally arrived in New York in 1885 in pieces and took 4 months to assemble in 1886 once the pedestal had been completed.

Great post. Climbed the Statue of Liberty years ago after waiting in line for hours. Have to say I never saw this picture before. How fitting for the Fourth of July!
