Aleppo, 100 Years Ago

Aleppo, one hundred years ago

Aleppo, in the northwest of Syria, is one of its most populous cities and has been occupied since prehistoric times. This is a photo of it from c.1900-1920, with a view of the medieval Aleppo citadel in the background.  It is a city filled with people, history, and culture.

This city is currently the scene of some of Syria’s worst fighting. Time’s photoblog had a really good photoessay on the modern conflict called ‘The Veils of Aleppo’ by Franco Pagetti that’s worth checking out as a comparison to the photo above.
