A Photo from the Crimean War, 1855

The Crimean War (1853-1856) was fought between the major European powers of the day: the Russian Empire vs. France, England, and the Ottoman Empire. The war was named because most of the battles happened in the Crimean peninsula, in Ukraine on the Black Sea. This photograph is by British photographer Roger Fenton and his collection of 360 photos from the war is one of the earliest examples of war photography.

The photo above is from 1855 and shows a dirt road scattered with cannonballs.
