I found this photo intriguing because of the few details that accompanied it. Here’s what the caption on the Library of Congress site stated:
“Photograph shows full-length portrait of an African American woman seated holding a white infant on her lap.”
What was more interesting was the inscription on the back of the photo. In pen is written:
“15 June 1866, Mary Allen Watson”.
And in pencil right beneath it is written:
“For dear Matilda, 19/1/67”
Makes you wonder who these people were and who the photo was gifted to, doesn’t it?
