Children on a Fieldtrip to the Zoo, 1899

Historical cuteness overload from the Smithsonian Institution Archives.  This 1899 photo by Frances Benjamin Johnston comes with the caption:

“School Children Viewing the First Bison at the National Zoo”

Hey, my kids and I visited the Washington National Zoo in the ’90s. Don’t remember any bison, though 😉 How cute, all dressed up, with their little hats, for the big day out!

  2. I agree! I’m also glad that when I visited a few years back, the fencing seemed to have improved a little since 1899. 🙂
